STEM in Year 6

Week of 9.3.20

This week HPS celebrated STEM week, with our lessons pairing with one of the fields in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Maths).  English lessons helped pupils learn how to investigate information. Through journalism, each pupil has learned to check facts, quote sources, and combine information into an article.  Our subject this week was the Cowardly Lion – what is the TRUE story? Ruben shared, “I liked doing today’s work (journalism) cause I like to write. Today was a newspaper and I got to create a headline:  Lion Attacks Doggo on the Yellow Bricky Road!”

When asked about his favourite lesson this week, Ruben mentioned Maths, stating “It was good.  I like ratio because I liked doing the guessing with fruit – like, if this is 12 bananas, but we have 24 pieces (of fruit), I liked figuring out the ratio of what was left.   The subject of Ratio carried over to Science with pupils experiencing how to decipher and apply data. We worked on coding, DNA, inheritance and how these all apply to our lives. “I liked learning about inheritance and DNA as me and my mum are very similar and we look alike,” Kaliya explained, “especially since we have a lot of the same features.  I only inherited small features from my dad.” After investigating their Fungiform papillae (tastebuds), pupils are now creating displays explaining how our data compares to the national average of Non-tasters, Tasters, and Super-Tasters.  Think you know which you are? Ask your pupil to help you figure it out!
