The children in Year 1 have had a very exciting Autumn term so far. Our topic ‘Hakuna Matata’ has been really interesting. In DT we explored masks from the Lion King stage show. We used some of the creator’s and our own ideas to make our own masks of wild animals that we might see on Safari. Using lots of different materials like felt, card, paper, stickers, pencils, pens, and tissue paper we made our masks. We planned our masks and wrote down what material we would use for features like the markings, ears and nose. We wanted to be as creative as possible- please see these examples of our work. We have evaluated these too. We are very proud of our masks.
Year 1 have been very lucky this week. We had a wonderful assembly with our school Reverend who joined us to tell a story that celebrated sharing and the message behind Harvest Festival. In our pink hall we have an enormous table with some food that has been kindly donated and some beautifully designed school-baked bread to celebrate Harvest Festival too! Thank you to those who have already donated some items. After our assembly, Year 1 welcomed our Reverend into our learning space for another activity and a meet and greet with him- we asked lots of interesting questions about his job and thanked him ever so much for teaching us a bit more about this time of year .
Just a reminder that there is a Phonics with Parents session for Year 1 parents tomorrow afternoon at 2.30-3pm. Please come to the office where you will be signed in then taken to the workshop in the Year 1 learning space. If you’re sadly unavailable but interested, we will be sharing the materials via the website and would be happy to answer any questions you may have about this. On the subject of Phonics, the Year 1s enjoy Phonics with Parents every Wednesday at 9.05. If you’re interested in coming to learn with your child and enjoy one of our teaching sessions then come round to the office after dropping off your child- we’d love to have you with us!
The children in Year 1 have been busy learning about ordinal numbers and estimating this week. We understand now that ordinal numbers are numbers in an order. We did an activity together and then we used this independently to show our understanding too. We have also been making sure that the Maths we learnt last week has ‘stuck’ with us as it was a little challenging- this is something the children in Year 1 know is part of being a learner in Year 2 and now they are thinking carefully about what resources they could use to help them. Well done Year 1!
